The Medical Readiness Review is an hour spent on the gap between what you have aboard and what your passage demands. You'll receive practical recommendations based on your existing equipment, crew training, and cruising plans, from a cardiac surgeon who is also a mariner.

You keep a written summary. It sets out, in priority order, the gaps in your equipment and what to add, the items to replace, the training that would most improve your crew's capability, and specific changes to your emergency planning.

What we review

Crew medical knowledge
Who aboard has training, what kind, and how current it is. Where responsibility falls if the most capable person is the one who's hurt.

Vessel and destination
Boat type, crew size, watch structure, and the route you're actually sailing. Time and distance to definitive care on each leg, and what evacuation realistically looks like where you'll be.

Equipment currently aboard
What's in your kit today. Redundancy, expiry, storage conditions, and whether the contents match your next passage.

Protocols and contacts
Whether you have written guidance you could follow under stress, and whether your telemedical and rescue coordination contacts are current for your cruising grounds.
How it works
- Book the review and receive a short intake questionnaire covering your vessel, itinerary, crew, and current kit.
- Return it with photographs of your medical locker and an inventory listing quantities and expiration dates.
- We talk for an hour, scheduled to suit your time zone.
- You receive a written summary: what to add, what to remove, what to replace, and what training would close your largest gaps, in priority order.

Do I need to own a Pelagic Medical kit?
No. We review kits from any supplier, including kits you have assembled yourself.
What if my kit turns out to be fine?
Then you'll leave the call knowing that, which is worth the hour. We'd rather tell you your kit is adequate than sell you one you don't need.
Can my whole crew join?
Yes, and we encourage it. The $295 fee covers one vessel and all participating crew. Having your crew participate helps everyone understand the equipment, responsibilities, and recommended next steps.
Can you review a specific crew member's medical conditions?
Not in this service. Individual medical questions are handled through our affiliated physician practice, and we can tell you how that works on the call.
How far ahead should I book?
Six to eight weeks before departure. That leaves time to order what's missing and to complete any training we recommend.
The Medical Readiness Review is a non-clinical consultation regarding vessel medical preparedness, equipment, and crew training. It is provided by Pelagic Medical LLC.
